US government tops global Bitcoin holdings with $15b in assets

The United States government possesses the most amount of Bitcoin globally, estimated at $14.7 billion.

The U.S. government presently has 212,847 BTC in its treasury accounts, according to Arkham data. This puts it slightly behind MicroStrategy, which has 214,246 BTC, currently valued at $14.8 billion.

In addition to Bitcoin, the United States possesses substantial amounts of other virtual currencies, such as Ethereum (ETH) and stablecoins like USDC and Tether (USDT), which are together worth around $200 million. With around $4.2 billion in Bitcoin assets, the UK government is the second-largest owner. Additionally, the German government owns Bitcoin to the tune of almost $3.4 billion. Nevertheless, neither nation has any other notable cryptocurrency, per Arkham statistics.

El Salvador has a stockpile of 5,717 Bitcoin, or around $400 million, and legally accepts it as legal money. El Salvador kept adding Bitcoin in 2022 even though the market collapse had cost them a lot of money. Since then, the nation's holdings have experienced a 50% profit.

The United States increased its Bitcoin reserves by at least 5,000 BTC at the beginning of 2023. This was mostly due to seizures linked to illegal operations, such as the notorious Silk Road, and cases involving people like Jimmy Zhong and organizations like the Bitfinex hackers.
